Those of us who are suffering from nostalgia for a taste of home and those who have only heard about and want to explore our culture through fruits and ‘whatnots’, you have landed on the right spot—Jamaica in Season. Here we will share the best of the best in food and culture, Jamaica has to offer.
Rather than just telling you about the birth of Jamaica In Season let me tell you a true story of a little six-year-old Jamaican boy who made, for him, an incredible discovery in the lush hill of St. Thomas many years ago.
Every morning as he got out of bed, he would go behind his house on the top of the hill to look and listen to the rolling river not too far from the foothills. This morning, although he was told many times not to go down the river by himself, he was overcome with curiosity and was determined to make it down to the gully to get a close-up view of this natural phenomenon.
But alas! Trying to dash through the branches of these trees, he was stopped in his tracks by these low-hanging green and bright yellow fruits. His curiosity got the better of him so he stopped, yanked the biggest, brightest yellow fruit he could reach, and bit viciously into it.
“Lawd! A wah dis taste so bad,” he said and spat it out, his lip burning. After many minutes of exploration taking him farther and farther away from the river, he began to see other fruits similar to the one he had bit into and other strange-shaped and colored ones but decided he didn’t want another experience he had just had biting into the fruit. So he picked a few including one of the big yellow ones he had just bit into. When he took them to his grandma and told her about his experience she laughed and told him its an orange, but it had to be peeled before it can be eaten.
Needless to say, after he had eaten this magical fruit and some of the others—guava, mango, he was hooked. He grew up to study what was in season all year round and tried every one of them. He was always in the bushes.
Just like you, that same little boy who now grew up and lives in Florida yearns for the taste of fresh hand-picked organic fruits. I know by now you guess that little boy is me and my passion is to bring straight to your door the tasty, pest-free, organic island fruits and “whatnots.”
